: SL Interactive based in Singapore is making a lot of waves in the N-Game gaming market. Here is an interview with it's VP Victor Lim and content manager Adrian Song:
What is wrong with the mobile game industry today?
Victor: It is difficult to order and buy a mobile game today. A consumer must remember the correct codes and button-pressing sequence just to buy a game. If you are not careful, your order for a game like Project Boyfriend might fetch something else where you may need to milk a cow. No doubt, you can find all the information on the network operator's website but how about those mobile handset users who are not accustomed to surfing the Internet for such information?
What are the demographics of your gamers? Is it all young Ah Bengs and Ah Lians?
Victor: You would be surprised. Lots of people who buy games are parents of kids and not the teenagers themselves. We have assisted and serviced many aunties and uncles trying to buy games which they indicated are for their wards. We suspect that some of the games are for themselves. Generally the aunties will go for casino and puzzle games and the guys want the action-packed stuff.
Who are the craziest gamers you have ever come across?
Victor: Our funniest experiences came from India. Recently, our game trilogy Hero Commando was chosen as an official mobile game for the Nokia N-Gage QD Challenge there. The top prize winner got a million rupees ($37,000).
Adrian: We encountered contestants who cried, begged, grovelled and curried favour hoping that they could get the second and third parts of the game trilogy from us before its official launch in India.
What is the future of mobile gaming? Do I have to be stuck on this Java platform with simple graphics all the time?
Victor: The future of mobile gaming can be seen with the rich N-Gage games present today. They are setting the standards of what kick-ass mobile games should be made of. Our games will eventually be made for the Symbian platform with richer graphics, sound, storyline and multiplayer capabilities. However, we have to give Java credit since it is doing quite a decent job at this moment.
You guys ever think of coming out with a Greatest Hits CD where people can download all your games at one go?
You don't need a CD with our games! We are about to unveil a new application called Xcess that will give you the latest gaming news feeds, allow you to search our catalogue, get free mobile gaming content and even see which are the most popular games that people around you are buying at the moment.

: A profile on MForma -
Mforma's business plan centers on gathering brand licenses to distribute and sometimes develop mobile content, including top-selling game titles such as "Top Gun." In the next year, it plans to roll out ring tones, games and other content for many of Marvel's characters, including The Incredible Hulk and Ultimate Spider-Man. Its specialty is the tiresome task of developing the same piece of content in several languages, for every phone in more than a dozen countries for more than 100 carriers. Huge challenges lie ahead. Developing content worldwide is complicated work, and other companies have made inroads, too. In addition and perhaps unique to Mforma the company has grown through acquisitions and must continue integrating all of the entities into one.
: LG develops new phone for 3D games.
: THQ Wireless teams up with Lucafilm to offer mobile games based on the Star Wars trilogy.
: During the recent 2005 IIHF World Junior Hockey Tournament, Exponentia and TSN launched a mobile prediction game allowing hockey fans across Canada to predict every key moment of the tournament on their mobile phone.
The mobile phone is the perfect device for large-scale audience interactivity. Almost everyone already has one, and people carry their phones with them whether they are at home, at the sports bar, or in-stadium, said Andrew Gregory, Principal at Exponentia. Our objective for the platform is to have all live sports be PlayAction-enabled, wherever in the world they occur.
: Biggest Chinese game developer Kongzhong to develop mobile game based on the hit film “Kung Fu Hustle”
Beijing-based market research house Analysys, in a report last year, predicted China's mobile gaming market would reach 600 million yuan (US$72.46 million) in 2004. The report rated Kongzhong No 1 in WAP and JAVA games. The firm held about 15 per cent of the market in last year's first quarter.
: Staci Kramer interviews Daniel Kranzler Chairman and CEO of Mforma. You can download the audio interview here. A few of his thoughts on what will it take for mobile to really take off in the US:
- Absolutely, the most important thing is to make it easier for consumers. It’s still unbelievably difficult for a conumer to find what they want. Then once they find it, it’s still hard to use.
– Most people don’t know what they’re doing. Many consumers lease product and don’t realize that they’re spending $60 for a bowling game …that’s wrong.
- I worry about wireless. Wireless has a lot of innovations that make a lot of noise about new subscribers and it dies when they get the next thing. I believe the department store model is bad – fast, simple, gets people excited today but it’s not a long-term strategy.
– What’s different about the U.S. are two factors: One, the U.S, consumer is very impatient. I want it now. Two, they have disposable income.
